The Pinacoteca Nazionale was established in 1752 when Pope Benedict XIV donated a collection of paintings from the Farnese family to the city of Bologna. The museum was initially located in the Archiginnasio, the ancient seat of the University of Bologna. In 1802, it moved to its current location, the former Saint Ignatius Jesuit novitiate, which is part of the city's University district and houses the Academy of Fine Arts.
